Cosa offre Umago?
Umag is a small town in
Istria and is the first tourist resort you reach beyond the Slovenia/Croatia
border. It is well-known for its history, its culture and its natural beauty,
but most of all for its sporting amenities, which include: football and
tennis (international tournaments are frequently held here), swimming, golf
and many others. Umag is one of the most important centres in Istria for
summer tourism. The central attraction for holiday-makers is the Punta
promontory north of the town with its tourist port, its hotels, sporting
facilities, supermarket and shops, restaurants, open-air dancing and much
else. In the same part of town you can find the Stella
Maris complex which houses water slides, water sports, 18 tennis courts
and tennis school, mini-golf, beach volley, table-tennis, gymnasium,
football pitch, go-kart, horse-riding, deltaplane centre and more. Of all
the sports activities, tennis is the most apparent (Umago has a total of 64
courts). In fact, the town has developed after the 1970s into the most
important tennis centre in the whole of Croatia. Since that time, a number
of world championships have been held here featuring some of the world’s
greatest players.
Near the beaches – some of which are rocky, others shale and sand,
but all are easy to reach – there are shady pine woods which reach right
up to the beaches themselves. What is more, the numerous tourist amenities
are connected by a local train service to the town centre of Umag.
